"Johann Sebastian Bach's Third Partita is a cathedral of imposing architecture, a masterpiece of light and spirituality, a heavenly union of soul and spirit. Those who have wished to be inspired by it have had to climb its immense pillars, to follow the contours of its ornamentation, to blend into its calligraphic and melodic perfection. More than that, they have had to grasp its discourse, and in the background, its harmony and polyphony, sometimes merely suggested, touched upon, and whose contours the imagination must constantly redraw. But above all, they have had to pursue this quest for an absolute relentlessly, and to try relentlessly to penetrate it further in order to get ever closer to what remains beyond reach. This is the ambition that carried Eugène Ysaÿe and Max Reger in writing these two sonatas. This is the ambition that carried me into this recording. It is a common inspiration, which each of them has illuminated in the light of his character, his experience and his spirituality. I had to take on the personal vision of each of these composers in order to be able to extract the substance of their works, without distorting them and without losing myself in my own evocations. Many questions have arisen, seeming to multiply with each attempt to find a path to understanding and freedom. They have helped me to strike a delicate balance between the profound truth of these texts and my personal sensitivity. This recording is a humble musician's reverence for these masterpieces, which I hope will give the listener a vision of this movement in constant improvement." Maïté Louis
